The cost of routine eye exams and prescription eyewear can be of real concern, especially for large families. In many cases, Vision Care Plans can lower these annual expenses.
A Vision Care Plan is not the same as health insurance. A Vision Care examination is a routine examination for someone who has no eye disease or symptoms of eye disease. Vision care plans, on the other hand, is a wellness benefit designed to provide routine eye care, and assist with prescription eyewear and other vision-related services at a reduced cost. If your doctor finds abnormalities during the routine examination further medical test may be required at another visit that would billed to your medical insurance.
- Please note that vision care exams do not qualify for prescribing medications nor can diabetic eye examinations be billed under vision coverage.
Medical Insurance Exam
A medical eye examination is for the diagnosis and treatment or monitoring of diseases and conditions of the eye performed by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. This exam evaluates the reasons for the symptoms and assesses any treatment needed. Some conditions evaluated with medical eye exams include allergies, cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and many other eye diseases and conditions.
Refraction is a diagnostic test used to determine your “best corrected vision.” Most patients will have a refraction done during both types of exam.
For some medical conditions Refraction is needed to determine best correctable vision even when eyeglasses are not prescribed. The majority of health insurance companies do not cover this procedure and it is required that payment be made by the patient for refraction.
